描述
Explore the charming neighborhood of Greenwich Village on a guided walking tour. See its famous brownstone buildings, quaint cafes and restaurants, tree-lined streets, and parks scattered throughout.
We’re going back to an era of American bohemia on this tour of a New York City neighborhood that has long challenged social norms and promoted progressive values: Greenwich Village.
Our first stop will be Washington Square Park, where decades ago you may have caught a young Bob Dylan strumming his guitar and where today up-and-coming musicians still perform. While the park has considerable significance in the folk and rock ‘n’ roll era of the 1960s and 1970s, we’ll explore its earlier roots as a Native American settlement and site of “Little Africa”.
Throughout our Greenwich Village tour, your guide will point out the former residences of writers and musicians including artist Andy Warhol, singer Buddy Holly, writer Edgar Allan Poe, and author Louisa May Alcott. You’ll learn how this neighborhood has long been associated with the 1960s counterculture movement and historically has been a haven for such artists during the heyday of beatnik New York.
You’ll also spot some historic buildings belonging to the encroaching New York University as well as some quieter streets used for filming locations.
Your New York City walking tour ends at Stonewall Inn. Here, your tour guide will take you through the events leading up to and after the Stonewall riots of 1969, considered a pivotal moment in the gay liberation movement in the United States.
While Greenwich Village has undergone much gentrification since its heady days as a haven for those considered “fringe”, you’ll walk away with an appreciation of the stories and landmarks we strive to preserve on our walking tours!
