Named for Henry Gaylord Wilshire, an Ohio native who made and lost fortunes in real estate, farming, and gold mining, the boulevard was initiated in the 1890s when Wilshire cleared out a path in his barley field.
Running for 15.83 miles from Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles to Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Wilshire Boulevard is densely developed throughout most of its span.
