The perfect way to spend the day with family or friends, with an adventurous morning and a relaxing afternoon to explore some of the best the island has to offer.
This excursion takes place in Parque Natural da Ribeira dos Caldeirões, one of the most extraordinary parks in the northeastern part of the island of São Miguel (+/- 45 minute drive away from the city of Ponta Delgada). Upon arrival, we will proceed with the distribution of your personal equipment and then set off on short walk of ~ 15min to our first stop where we will have our first safety briefing.
We will then continue on a short scramble uphill where we will then stop for our second safety briefing, where we will show you how to rappel before continuing onwards and upwards for another ~10min to the start of the canyon where the fun will begin!
The Canyoning Experience: After reaching the top of the canyon you will start the second part of your adventure. You can expect several jumps (between 2 and 7 meters in height, all optional), a natural slide and some abseils (between 5 and 15m in height). We will walk back along our initial path to the starting point.
Note:
– The exact itinerary including jumps, abseils and other techniques will depend on local conditions and seasons. The terrain, landscape and flow of the stream normally change throughout the year.
– If you feel uncomfortable, there are different alternatives for every obstacle.
After the canyoning experience, it’s time for a well-deserved lunch. We will go to the village of Furnas where you will taste a traditional dish “Cozido das Furnas” in a local restaurant. Cozido das Furnas is a mixture of meats and vegetables that are placed in a large pot buried under the ground and cooked slowly by the natural heat of volcanic activity.
We will then take a short walk to the Caldeiras Vulcânicas to get a closer look at the fumarolic fields and hot springs.
Proceed with a visit to Terra Nostra Botanical Garden where you can explore the botanical garden with its wide collection of trees and plants and/or relax in its thermal water.

A normal level of fitness is recommended. This tour sometimes includes: walking on unstable terrain and slippery rocks, muddy slopes and small uphill and downhill scrambles.
You don’t need to know how to swim, just be comfortable in the water. However, let us know if this is the case.
This activity is not recommended for persons with back problems. Please let us know of any previous injuries, medical conditions or health problems when booking.
Pick-up will be provided at or close to the place of your accommodation. When the activity is over, we will drop you off at the same place. Consider this for the city of Ponta Delgada (for other areas, please contact us).
