Day 1: Cusco Humantay Lake - Salkantay Basecamp
Begin the trek with a 4:30 am hotel pickup and a 3-hour drive to the trailhead. After breakfast, meet your support team and hike to Soraypampa at 3,800 m, taking about 3 hours. Enjoy lunch, then hike 2 hours to Humantay Lake at 4,200 m, exploring its stunning views. Continue another 2 hours to Salkantay Pampa campsite at 4,150 m. End the day with dinner under the stars.
Day 2: Basecamp - Salkantay Pass - Cloud Forest
Start with coffee or coca tea, then a 2-hour ascent to the trek's highest point at 4,630 m. Explore the area and a nearby lake, then descend for 3 hours to Wayracmachay for lunch. Continue 3 more hours downhill through a temperature and landscape shift to the cloud forest, ending at the Collpapampa campsite next to a village at 2,770 m (9,087 ft).
Day 3: Campsite - Pachamanca Barbecue - Llactapata
After breakfast, start the day hiking through scenic paths, wooden bridges, waterfalls, and plantations to Lucmabamba for lunch at 2,000 m. Participate in a traditional Pachamanca Barbecue and visit organic coffee farms. Then, embark on a 3-hour ascent on the ancient Inca Trail to Llaqtapata at 2,750 m, an Inca site offering views of Machu Picchu. You'll camp facing the iconic citadel.
Day 4: Llactapata - Hydroelectrica - Aguas Calientes
Start with a view of Machu Picchu from your tent while you enjoy a cup of our freshly brewed coffee and breakfast. Descend 2 hours to the hydroelectric station for a final brunch with your trekking team before a 3-hour hike along the railway and Urubamba River to Aguas Calientes. Explore the Mandor Botanical Gardens, home to diverse bird species and orchids. Arrive in Aguas Calientes, check into your hotel, then enjoy the evening in the city or the hot springs and dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 5: Explore Machu Picchu - Return to Cusco
The climax of the Salkantay Trek is visiting Machu Picchu, one of the world's new seven wonders. After an early breakfast at your hotel, take the first buses to witness the sunrise at Machu Picchu. Enjoy a 2 to 3 hours guided tour exploring famous sites and uncovering the mysteries of this Inca citadel. After Machu Picchu, you can hike Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain.
Return to Aguas Calientes for lunch, retrieve your belongings from the hotel, and board the Panoramic Vistadome train to Ollantaytambo, followed by a private van back to Cusco, arriving around 7:30 pm.
