Oaxaca: Xaaga-Hierve el Agua 1 Day Hiking TourPrice for 2-3 people

Hike, eat, swimm, drink mezcal, and marvel at the amazing landscape of Hierve el Agua Mountains, all in one trip. 25+ years of experience.
This tour starts in Xaaga, a village located at the foot of the mountain where we will begin our hike. To reach this place, we will drive approximately 1.5 hours from Oaxaca City. The trail along which we will hike is the old road that was used by the inhabitants of the communities surrounding Hierve el Agua to reach Mitla, which is the largest and most important town in the area.

The first part of the tour starts at 1600 meters above sea level, and we will ascend to 2250 meters above sea level. It is approximately 5 km of ascent to the highest point of the tour. Along the trail we can observe various types of plants, trees, and some species of wild agaves, it is also possible to observe different species of birds and some small animals of the area. As we ascend, we will be able to observe part of the valley of Tlacolula and the mountains of Oaxaca’s Northern Mountain Range. Once at the top, we will have enough time to rest, enjoy the surroundings, eat some fruit, and admire the incredible view of the place.

Once ready, we will begin the second part of our tour. First, we will descend 6 kilometers on varied terrain that includes some parts of loose rocks, then we will climb 1 extra kilometer on a country road to the village where Hierve el Agua is located.

In the village we will enjoy a delicious local meal prepared in a traditional way on a comal and after lunch, we will head towards the petrified waterfalls which is the highlight of the tour, there you will have enough time to visit the waterfalls and swim in the natural pools.

We return to the city of Oaxaca after having comfortably enjoyed all the activities. On our way back (if we are still on time) we can stop at one palenque to see how mezcal is made and taste its different presentations.
