Embark on a thrilling 2-day bike trip from Oaxaca to Cuicatlan. Explore cascading waterfalls and lush mango orchards on challenging terrains.
Day One:
40km bike ride + 30 min. hike.

Depending on your physical level and stamina the distances can vary.

We’ll drive 1 hour from Oaxaca City to Asunción Nochixtlán where we will start our bike ride. The area, in which we will be riding, is part of the Mixteca region; it is the driest and one of the poorest regions of Oaxaca. We will ride through some small villages where you will have the opportunity to see the day-to-day life of the Oaxacan countryside. Throughout the day, we will enjoy wonderful views so don’t forget to bring your cameras. We will finish our ride with a fun descent to Santiago Apoala, a small village located at the bottom of a canyon and the place where we will spend the night.

We will have lunch, and once we have recovered our energy, we will hike along a river towards the beautiful waterfall which is the highlight of the day. If the weather is nice, it will be possible to swim in the natural pools downstream. During the rainy season swimming might not be possible due to the strength of the current.

You can spend the rest of the evening reading, relaxing or walking in the village.

Day Two:
1 hour hike + 50km bike ride

Depending on your fitness and stamina the distances can vary.

We will wake up early to hike towards the narrowest section of the Apoala Canyon where we can admire its impressive walls of 200 meters high. We’ll go back to the village to have breakfast and prepare our departure. The toughest riders can choose to start from the village and ride 4km uphill but, if you choose to skip the first climb, we will just drive 20 minutes from the village to the starting point.

We will be riding on country roads that wind through part of the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán reserve. The ever-changing landscape and wonderful views are the highlight of the day, varying from wheat and corn plantations to mountains covered with giant cacti towering above the trees. The last section of this day’s ride features an almost 25km long descent to Cuicatlan, the place where we will end our ride and have lunch. Cuicatlan is one of the main mango-producer towns and from there it takes around 2.5 hours to return to Oaxaca city.
