Santa Maria di Monteoliveto, best known as Sant’Anna dei Lombardi, can be considered the emblem for the Tuscan Reinassance in Naples. Its founding dates back to 1411. The complex of Sant’Anna was particularly dear to the Aragonese Dynasty, especially to Alfonso II, who used to go there on a daily basis. The church’s nave with its five chapels on each side-aisle treasures the fruitful relationships between foreign artists and the Neapolitan ones from the mid-500s, including the Spanish artist Pedro Rubiales and the Tuscan Giorgio Vasari, who splendidly frescoed the sacristy’s vault. Moreover, a young Michelangelo sculptured a puttino, which is also to be marveled at. The Compianto sul Cristo Morto is as important with its accuracy of details in expressing the characters’ energy as well as their emotional force in their movements.
