Not far from the al-Azar mosque is the Benedictine Monastery. On its territory is one of the most beautiful churches. A stone with a Latin inscription about the stay of the Xth Roman Legion Fretensis is embedded in the ancient walls of the church. The large prayer hall is decorated with massive square columns. Remains of medieval frescoes have been preserved on them and on the walls. Now the monks and nuns of the Order of St. Lazarus live in the Benedictine monastery.
