Mother House
Considered as pilgrimage rather than a tourist place, the Mother House in Kolkata is a holy and very serene place that one can be at. The Mother House is the Head Quarter of the Missionaries of Charity that pulls thousands of visitors from all around the world.
Mother House was founded in 1950 with a single purpose of selfless service towards the underprivileged and poorest of the poor.
The visiting hours of the Mother House are – Morning 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Evening 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
The Mother House remains open all day of the week except for Thursdays. The house remains closed for visitors on Easter Sundays and 26th Decembers, days after Christmas.
There is no entry fee to visit Mother House.
• Howrah Bridge (Pass by)
An iconic landmark in Kolkata, the Howrah Bridge is a huge steel bridge over the Hooghly River. Commissioned in 1943. It is considered to be one of the longest cantilever bridges in the world and is currently the sixth-longest bridge of its type in the world. Also known as Rabindra Setu, named after the first India and Asian noble laureate Rabindranath Tagore, it connects Howrah and Kolkata. It carries 100,000 vehicles and countless pedestrians daily.
• St. John's Church
St. John's Church, originally a cathedral, was among the first public buildings erected by the East India Company after Kolkaya (Calcutta) became the effective capital of British India. Construction of the building, modelled on St martin-in-the-Fields of London started in 1784, with Rs 30,000 raised through a public lottery and was completed in 1787. It is the third oldest church in the city.
• Marble palace
Marble Palace is a palatial nineteenth-century mansion in North Kolkata. It is one of the best-preserved and most elegant houses of nineteenth-century Calcutta. The mansion is famous for its marble walls, floors, and sculptures, from which it derives its name.
The house was built in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick, a wealthy Bengali merchant with a passion for collecting works of art. The house continues to be a residence for his descendants, and the current occupants are the family of Raja Rajendra Mullick Bahadur.
• Victoria Memorial Hall
The Victoria Memorial is a large white marble monument in Central Kolkata. It was built between 1906 and 1921 and dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria, the Empress of India from 1876 to 1901.
It is the largest monument to a monarch anywhere in the world. It stands at 64 acres of gardens and is now a museum. Possessing prominent features of the Indo-Saracenic architect and has evolved into one of the most popular attractions in the city.
