Discover the Jewish heritage of Cochin and Muziris on a private tour. Visit the Paradesi Synagogue, explore the preserved Jewish streets, see the ruins of Kadaumbahagom Synagogue at Mattancherry, pay homage to Rabbi Nahemiah Ben Abraham Motta or Namia Motta ( 1615 ) at his tomb in Mattancherry. Walk along the White Jews Cemetory Road. At the cemetory closed to visitors but we will be able to pay respect from the gate to those rest in "GAN SHALOM" here who have created history and the jewish town.
It is next a drive to Ernakulam to visit "Kadavumbhagom Synagogue" preserved by
Mr. Elias “Babu” Josephai. who will be happy to show you around ( you should be dressed modestly.)
Later we will stop to photograph from its closed gate the of the Thekkumbhagom Synagogue.
Both the above 2 synagogues are in the Ernakulam Market and Boradway which is large market which sells everything exept of nothing.
Later we drive about 1 hour 30 minutes to visit the Paravur Synagogue at North Paraur. Paravur Synagogue, is a former Orthodox Jewish Synagogue of a Jewish congregation flourished in Kerala. This synagogue is one of the largest and most complete among the Jewish synagogues in Kerala. Built by the Malabar Jews, in 750 CE or 1105 CE. The present synagogue complex dates from 1616 CE.
Later from Paravur we drive to Chendamangalam Synagogue. The synagogue structure itself dates from 1420, and was renovated in 1614, making it the oldest synagogue in the British Commonwealth of Nations. A tombstone stored in this synagogue and is on display in the front yard, with an inscription of Sarah Bat Israel, dating from 1269, making it the second oldest Jewish epitaph found in India.
Later we drive about an hour to Mala. Here a reconstructed 14th-century synagogue, which was renovated almost four centuries later, in 1792 was a flourishing synagogue of thriving Jewish wealthy merchant community. Later the Mala Jewish community migrated to Israel in 1955.
After visiting Mala we return to Kochi about 2 hours drive.
Paravoor, Chendamangalm, and Muziris.
Sit down for a beachside lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, drive back to Cochin. En route, visit the modern city of Kochi and see the preserved Kadavumbhagom Synagogue of Malabar Jews or black Jews.
If you prefer, take a look around the vegetable, fruits, and spice market in the area. The drives to and from the above places provide insights into the life of people in villages on the way. Return to the pier in time to board the ship.
