Vienne was also the seat of the archbishopric in the Middle Ages. In the 12th century the Archbishop of Vienne became Pope. In the 14th century, King Philip the Fair condemned the Templars in Vienne Cathedral. In the 16th century Francis Ist had his son's heart buried in the choir of the cathedral.
