The wonderful Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre is home to gibbons, sun bears, elephants, tigers, lions, deer, enormous pythons and a massive bird enclosure.
In reality, there are already over 20,000 Buddha statues - out of the planned 84,000! 2,000 gold-plated Buddhas alone line the 199 steps to the 10-meter statue that towers over the one below in the Puth Kiri Pagoda, while thousands of other Buddhas meditate.
The Ta Prohm temple at Tonle Bati was a sanctuary for Hindu deities at the same time. The site had been a Hindu place of worship already since the sixth century, in the pre-Angkorian Phnom-Da period, belonging to the maritime “empire” called Funan.
