Explore the impressive tourist sights outside of Phnom Penh on a 2-day tour. Visit the magnificent twin hills of Phnom Reap, the ancient city of Long Vek, and the ancient temples of Phnom Da and Phnom Chiso.
Day1: Be picked up at the lobby of your hotel and transfer to visit Phnom Reap Temple which is alternatively known as Prasat Vihear Suor. This relatively new structure which was finished in 1998 and is based on the architectural style of Angkor Wat and is referred to as the new Angkor Wat.
Drive to visit Udong, which was the royal capital between 1618 and 1866 before the capital was moved to Phnom Penh. The walk up the hill over 500 steps provides an excellent exercise especially the view countryside view.
These hills were also the site of some of the Khmer Rouge’s most prolonged resistance against the Vietnamese army in 1979 and a memorial to those murdered by the Khmer Rouge was built on this place. After that, keep going to visit Long Vek, a city in ancient Cambodia.
It was the second capital city during the Cambodia's Middle Ages which began after the Khmer Empire's Angkor Era. The city was known to early European traders as "Cambodia". The city use to serve as center of the country's military. It was a gathering point for people of knowledge including scholars and martial artists.
Longvek was chosen by King Ang Chan I after the sacking of Angkor by the Siamese as a new capital because of its more readily defensible terrain. Return to Phnom Penh and be dropped off at your hotel.
Day 2: Be picked up at your hotel and transfer to Phnom Da, built on the top of a small hill with about 100 steps to reach in the 5-6th century by King Rutravarman, who reigned during the Norkor Phnom period. This was the 1st Khmer Capital City of Chenla Teuk Lich ( Lower Chenla ).
There is evidence of human habitation from at least 400 BCE and the present temple (11th century) stands on the footprint of an earlier temple (5-6th century). There are important caves, one of which has the Yoni pedestal for a missing Shivalingam. On the other side of the hill is the Asram Maharishi, and although the original deity is long gone, it is currently a venerated shrine in the memory of a great sage.
Next, visit Ta Prohm, built by King Jayavarman VII on the site of a 6th century Khmer shrine. See the main sanctuary which consists of five chambers, each with a lingam inside, and marvel at the tree that grows on and around the temple structure.
Visit a temple surrounded by legend, Yeay Peau temple, named after King Ta Prohm’s mother. After that, head to Prasat Neang Khmao, the temple of the Black Virgin. Finally, keep going to visit Phnom Chisor, a popular ancient temple and contemporary monastery site located around 50 km south of Phnom. Return to Phnom Penh and be dropped off at your hotel.
