This causes the tonle sap to vary in depth and area, the depth at the start of the wet season is approximately only 1.5 meters but during the height of the wet season, raises to over 10 meters deep, the forests fill up quickly and the floating villages move in as the water raises.

Its a unique feature of the lake and life revolves around this, the actual area goes from 2700 squares kilometers to over 12000 squares km as a result. The tonle sap lake is the largest fresh water lake in southeast asia and the richest fishing lake in the world. The trip to the lake is some 14 kilometers, we pick you up at your hotel/guesthouse/hostel etc. in our air-conditioned minivan/car or tuk tuk, and make two stops along the way to the lake, firstly at the lotus flower farm, a flower that is deeply entwined in the Buddhist culture, your guide will explain the many uses of the flower and plant, all of the plant including the stem has a use,also a great place for photos of the vast fields of color.
You will travel past many rice paddies along the way, and see the magnificent cambodian countryside. Then we get to the entry of the river we have private boats waiting for you to take you to and around the floating villages. as we cruise along the sometimes narrow rivers, with many turns and twists, we enter a world that time seems to have forgotten,some 6000 people call the floating villages home, with floating schools, churches, markets, police station and a jail, basketball courts , vegetable gardens, all floating , an amazing sight, than as we turn another corner a huge fresh water lake appears, more like a sea, its the largest fresh water lake in s e asia, home to over 120 different species of birds, mainly huge water birds, designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 1997 due to the high biodiversity. we will also dock with a 100 year old ex cargo boat (queen tara riverboat) for drinks and local fresh fruits.
