The village covers an area of about 1,800 hectares and is now inhabited by 988 people of the Tujia ethnic group, with 184 hammock buildings, of which 88 are in the core protection area. The hammock buildings in Shiyanping Village are simple and primitive, with a long human history and a splendid folk culture.

The footstool buildings in Shiyanping Village are the crystallisation of the wisdom of the Tujia people, with ingenious designs, carved beams and painted buildings, flying eaves and warped corners, which are very characteristic. These buildings are not only the masterpieces of Tujia folk houses, but also the physical witnesses to the study of the characteristics of Xiangxi national architecture and the evolution of its style, with important historical, artistic and scientific values.
