Mostar is a city that is rich in history and culture, and it is a great place to visit.
The iconic Stari Most Bridge is in the Old Town, alongside the Herzegovina Museum and Old Bazaar. Known as Mostar’s oldest bridge, the popular Stari Most bridge crosses over the Neretva river, connecting both sides of Mostar. Stari Most is the miniaturized Stari Most, the scenic bridge is situated within a beautiful environment in Mostar’s Old City.
This bridge might not be as iconic as the oldest one -- the original bridge from 1566 -- but it is a lot closer, has nice views over the most famous bridge, and is worth adding to your list of things to do in Mostar. This statue is so eclectic I cannot help but urge others to add it to their list of things to do in Mostar, although it is quite far away from the old-the original 1566 bridge, which may not make sense if you are hoping to experience Mostar within one day. The bridge is gorgeous, and the Neretva river underneath is gorgeous, too, and admiring views of the bridge from every perspective is one of the most popular things to do in Mostar, and with very good reason. Its iconic, UNESCO-designated Old Bridge gives the city its name, Mostar, or the Bridge-Keeper, and several of the best things to do in Mostar are centred around Stari Most.
The first glimpse of the central bridge, the Stari Most, makes visitors want to jump for joy -- but seeking out alternative corners of Mostar uncovers intriguing stories and welcoming people.
North of the bridge, some of the best places to view Stari Most include restaurant terraces on both sides of the Neretva river, the Old Bazaar on its east side, and Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, particularly the view from its minaret. Just minutes north of the Old Bridge, which is iconic in the UNESCOs list, and located on the Muslim side of the Neretva (east) river, the Mosque Koski Mehmed Pasha (Koski Mehmed-Pasina Dzamija) is the oldest in the Old Town. When visiting Koski Mehmed Pashas Mosque, you can ascend its minarets to enjoy some of the best views over Stari Most in Mostar.
The iconic Old Bridge, bazaar-lined streets, and the mosques are some of the top things to see and do in Mostar. Wandering around the Old Bazaar is a must-do activity in Mostar, with its busy, colourful streets and vibrant vibe adding to its charm. Whether you are at Kujundziluk Old Bazaar to purchase something or not, it is well worth the walk around to simply enjoy Old Bazaar while on the way to the rest of your things to do in Mostar.
The Old Bazaar extends on either side of the Stari Most, dividing Muslim and Croatian sides of Mostar. There is a market on each side of the pretty turquoise River Neretva next to the Stari Most because of the division between Bosniak and Croat ethnic groups who live in the city, though the differences between them are not obvious to visiting tourists. These streets can be busy in the middle of the day, with day-trippers visiting Mostar town, but by evening, the crowds are thinner, and walking around on these streets is a pleasure. Back on the other side of Stari Most, it is time to visit the bazaars along the eastern banks of Mostar’s Old Town.
