A Full detailled day by day Itinerary
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Elevation: 1,870 m (6,135 ft) to 2,720 m (8,920 ft)
Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
After a short drive from Moshi to the Marangu Gate, you will complete registration. The trek starts with a walk through dense rainforest, where you might spot blue monkeys and various bird species. You will reach Mandara Hut in the early evening. Overnight at Mandara Hut.
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 2,720 m (8,920 ft) to 3,720 m (12,200 ft)
Distance: 12 km (7.5 miles)Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland
The hike continues through the forest, transitioning into the moorland zone where you can see giant lobelias and groundsels. The trail offers clear views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. You will reach Horombo Hut, where you will spend the night.
Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m (12,200 ft) to 4,703 m (15,430 ft)
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trail to Kibo Hut is long and more challenging, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes more barren and rocky, resembling a lunar desert. You'll reach Kibo Hut in the afternoon, where you'll rest and prepare for the summit push.
Day 4: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut
Elevation: 4,703 m (15,430 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and down to 3,720 m (12,200 ft)
Distance: 21 km (13 miles)
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland Around midnight, you will begin the ascent to the summit. The trail to the summit is steep and consists of switchbacks up to Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From Gilman’s Point, you will continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, you will descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and then continue down to Horombo Hut.
Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Elevation: 3,720 m (12,200 ft) to 1,870 m (6,135 ft)
Distance: 20 km (12.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland to Rainforest
On the final day, you will descend through the moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificates. A vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Moshi.
Important Notes:
Acclimatization: The 5-day Marangu Route is more challenging for acclimatization since it doesn’t include an extra day for acclimatization. Proper strategies such as "climb high, sleep low," staying hydrated, and monitoring for altitude sickness symptoms are crucial.
Physical Preparation: Regular cardio workouts, strength training, and practice hikes are recommended to prepare for the trek. Mental Preparedness: The summit push is especially tough due to the high altitude and long hours, so maintaining a positive mindset is essential.
While the 5-day Marangu Route offers a quicker ascent to the summit, it requires good physical and mental preparation to handle the altitude and demanding hiking schedule.
