KILIMANJARO 3-DAY TREK - MARANGU ROUTE TOUR ITINERARY

DAY 1: Kilimanjaro National Park Marangu Gate and hike to Mandara Hut.
On the first day of your trek, you will begin with breakfast and an orientation session. Following this, you will embark on a drive of approximately one hour to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Marangu. Here, you will complete the necessary registration before starting your hike through the lush rainforest. The trail leads you through dense vegetation where you may encounter various wildlife, including Colobus monkeys. A recommended side excursion is to Maundi Crater, which offers breathtaking views of northern Tanzania and Kenya. The day’s hike covers a distance of about 8 km (5 miles) and takes approximately 3-4 hours to reach Mandara Hut, situated at an elevation of 2700 m (8875 ft). After settling in at the hut, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.

DAY 2: Hike from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (BLD)
The second day begins with breakfast at Mandara Hut before setting off on your hike towards Horombo Hut. This leg of the journey covers around 12 km (7.5 miles) and typically takes about 5-6 hours. As you leave the rainforest behind, you’ll traverse wide moorlands that provide stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. It’s important to be aware that as you ascend to an elevation of 3700 m (12,200 ft), altitude effects may start to manifest. Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, you’ll have time to relax and acclimatize while enjoying dinner and preparing for the next day’s trek.

DAY 3: Hike from Horombo Hut to the park gate; return to Moshi/Arusha (BL)
On your final day, after breakfast at Horombo Hut, you will begin your descent back down towards Mandara Hut and continue through lush woodland until reaching the Marangu National Park gate. This section involves hiking approximately 20 km (12.5 miles) over about 4-5 hours. The descent can be muddy and damp in lower altitudes; therefore, using trekking poles and gaiters is advisable for stability and comfort. Once you arrive at the park gate, a vehicle will be waiting to transport you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
