The Machame Route, also known as the "Whiskey Route," is one of the most popular routes for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers diverse landscapes and a high success rate due to its gradual ascent.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Elevation: 1,800m (5,905ft) to 3,000m (9,840ft)
Distance: 11km (7 miles)
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Start with a drive from Moshi to the Machame Gate for registration. The trek begins through the dense rainforest, where you might see black and white colobus monkeys. The path is often muddy and slippery, so good trekking boots are essential.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Elevation: 3,000m (9,840ft) to 3,840m (12,600ft)
Distance: 5km (3 miles)
Trekking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
The trail continues through the rainforest and then ascends to the moorland zone. You'll notice a significant change in vegetation as giant heathers and unique flora start to dominate the landscape.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp
Elevation: 3,840m (12,600ft) to 4,630m (15,190ft) to 3,950m (12,960ft)
Distance: 10km (6 miles)
Trekking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Semi-desert
This day is crucial for acclimatization. Start with a gradual ascent to Lava Tower (4,630m/15,190ft), where you might experience the effects of altitude for the first time. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp, which helps your body acclimate to the altitude.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,950m (12,960ft) to 4,200m (13,780ft)
Distance: 5km (3 miles)
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the day with a challenging scramble up the Barranco Wall. This section is not technical but requires some basic rock climbing skills. Once at the top, enjoy views of the Heim Glacier and Kibo's southern face. The path then descends into the Karanga Valley before a final ascent to Karanga Camp.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 4,200m (13,780ft) to 4,673m (15,331ft)
Distance: 4km (2.5 miles)
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The trek from Karanga to Barafu Camp is a gradual but steady ascent through the alpine desert. The landscape is harsh and barren, with little vegetation. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon, allowing plenty of time to rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,673m (15,331ft) to 5,895m (19,341ft) to 3,100m (10,170ft)
Distance: 17km (10.5 miles)
Trekking Time: 10-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
Wake up around midnight for the most challenging part of the ascent. The trek to Stella Point (5,739m/18,828ft) is steep and strenuous. From Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,341ft), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating your achievement and taking photos, begin the descent to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp.
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100m (10,170ft) to 1,640m (5,380ft)
Distance: 10km (6.2 miles)
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
The final day involves a descent through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate. The path is often muddy, so trekking poles can be helpful.
