Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
Elevation: 1,600 m (5,250 ft) to 2,850 m (9,350 ft)
Distance: Approximately 11 km (6.8 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your trek starts at Umbwe Gate, where you'll register and meet your team. The trail begins steeply, ascending through dense rainforest. Keep an eye out for wildlife like Colobus monkeys. Your campsite, Umbwe Cave Camp, offers a serene setting amidst the trees.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Elevation: 2,850 m (9,350 ft) to 3,960 m (12,995 ft) (with an optional ascent to 4,630 m/15,190 ft at Lava Tower)
Distance: Approximately 6 km (3.7 miles)
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Habitat: Moorland, Semi-desert
Today, the trail steepens as you ascend higher. You'll encounter the first section of steep, rocky terrain. After reaching the Umbwe Ridge, the path levels out somewhat. Optionally, you can take a side trip to Lava Tower for better acclimatization before descending to Barranco Camp for overnight.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Elevation: 3,960 m (12,995 ft) to 4,035 m (13,230 ft)
Distance: Approximately 5 km (3.1 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
The day begins with a scramble up the Barranco Wall, offering breathtaking views of the valley below. The trail then winds through picturesque landscapes, passing through the Karanga Valley before arriving at Karanga Camp, situated beneath the southern glacier of Kibo.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Elevation: 4,035 m (13,230 ft) to 4,673 m (15,331 ft)
Distance: Approximately 4 km (2.5 miles)
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Leaving Karanga Camp, you'll embark on a short but steep hike to Barafu Camp. As you ascend, the vegetation thins out, giving way to barren alpine desert. Barafu Camp, situated on a rocky ridge, is your last stop before the summit push.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp
Elevation: 4,673 m (15,331 ft) to 5,895 m (19,341 ft) and down to 3,100 m (10,170 ft)
Distance: Approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) ascent, 12 km (7.5 miles) descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours to the summit, 4-6 hours descent
Habitat: Arctic to Rainforest
You'll start the summit attempt in the early hours, trekking under the stars with headlamps guiding the way. As dawn breaks, you'll reach Stella Point on the crater rim, before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating, descend to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Elevation: 3,100 m (10,170 ft) to 1,640 m (5,380 ft)
Distance: Approximately 10 km (6.2 miles)
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Your final descent takes you through the lush rainforest, where you'll enjoy the rich biodiversity of Kilimanjaro. Arriving at Mweka Gate, you'll sign out and collect your summit certificates before transferring to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
