Explore two of Sri Lanka’s UNESCO-listed highlights on a privately guided day trip to Dambulla and Sigiriya Rock from Colombo.

Your tour begins at your hotel in Colombo, where your chauffeur will pick you up. If you are unable to have breakfast at the hotel, be sure to bring a packed meal with you.

The first stop is the 5th-century AD rock fortress of Sigiriya, where King Kasyapa once ruled (Entrance Fee: USD 35 per person). Walk through the entrance framed by the paws of a lion, befitting its name, "Lion Rock." Admire the beautiful, unfading murals that have brought Sigiriya its fame. Climb the steep staircase to see the terraced gardens and still-functioning cisterns, and walk through the tunnels leading to the palace to experience the grandeur of a bygone era.

After exploring Sigiriya, which you will reach by car (Travel Time: 3 to 3 ½ hours), you can enjoy lunch at a place of your choice (at your own expense) or opt for a village tour (Entrance Fee: USD 20 per person, including four village activities and lunch). Then, you will head to the Dambulla Cave Temple (Travel Time: 35 to 45 minutes).

The near-vertical walls of Sigiriya soar to a flat-topped summit, home to the ruins of an ancient civilization, believed to be the epicenter of King Kassapa’s short-lived kingdom. As you journey to the atmospheric Dambulla Cave Temple, take in views of Sri Lanka’s countryside and villages. The Cliffside cave complex at Dambulla, also known as the Golden Temple, dates back to the 1st century BC and is packed with Buddha images and frescoes. Inside the historic caves, view ancient murals depicting the life of Lord Gautama Buddha and marvel at the hundreds of figurines of Buddha and other deities scattered throughout the five main caves. Visit the Cave of the Divine King, the Cave of the Great King, and the Great New Monastery, and see the giant golden Buddha statue just outside the cave complex.

You will finish the tour and return to your hotel in Colombo. On the way, you may stop at a restaurant of your choice for dinner.
