Start your day with a pickup from your hotel in Kandy and head to the Dambulla Cave Temple. A sacred pilgrimage site for 22 centuries, this cave monastery, with its five sanctuaries, is the largest, best-preserved cave-temple complex in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist mural paintings (covering an area of 2,100 m2) are of particular importance, as are the 157 statues.

Next, head to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. A complex masterpiece of irrigation engineering design, Sigiriya's artfully designed water gardens required structural planning way ahead of its time. Climb to the top of the rock and take in the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
