# TURTLE HATCHERY
There are 18 turtle hatcheries along the southern coast of the country.
Among them, Kosgoda turtle hatchery, started in 1981, is one of the oldest
turtle conservation projects in Sri Lanka. Kosgoda turtle hatchery is quite
popular for having all five turtle species seen on the country's beaches.
Functioning as a hatchery, Kosgoda projects envisage much more to
preserve the turtle life on the shore. They run various activities and
volunteer programs for locals and international tourists to go through and
have a knowledge of processes of turtle hatching.
# MADU RIVER
The Madu Ganga River is located in the southwest region of Sri Lanka, in
the district of Galle. It meanders its way through the coastal wetlands,
spanning an area of approximately 915 hectares. The river originates from
the pristine Akuressa Hills and travels a distance of about 64 kilometers
before reaching the Indian Ocean.
# MOONSTONE MINE
Pick up a blue moonstone anywhere in the world, and the chances are
that this beautiful gemstone would have come from a small village in
southwest Sri Lanka – Meetiyagoda – where it is mined in a few primitive
waterlogged pits, by hand, as it has been since 1906.
Meetiyagoda is just a couple of kilometres from the coast, midway
between Ambalangoda and Hikkaduwa, sitting over the earth’s largest
pegmatite vein of moonstone. The ten mines in Meetiyagoda are by far
the world’s primary source of blue moonstones.
# HIKKADUWA CORAL BEACH
# GALLE DUTCH FORT
Galle Fort in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by the Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka.[1]
The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population.[2][3][4] The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch people who still own some of the properties inside the fort are looking at making this one of the modern wonders of the world.[4][5] The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries."[3]
