Soweto tour : Experience the history and lifestyle of this vibrant township of Johannesburg. Soweto began as a shanty town in the 1930s and became the largest black township.
This 4hours Soweto bicycle tour give you an opportunity to visit different historical sights in the one of the biggest township in South Africa. Enjoy some of the local food.
The tour starts at : Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication to choose bikes and get brief presentation of the tour. Walter Sisulu Square is a unique South African destination, As the site of the 1955 Congress of the people, the Walter Sisulu Square represents the most representative gathering in the history of South Africa and the democratic approach taken in documenting the vision of ordinary South Africans. The process of drafting the Freedom Charter was the first time in South African history where all South African were given an opportunity to voice their dreams and hopes for a future democratic South Africa, irrespective of race, colour, education, language, sex, personal beliefs and organizational affiliation.
After we visit the local community project in the Kliptown area, working with e kids and youth in the area. the name of the project is : The Shalk
After we cycle for 15 minutes to visit another part of Soweto called Pimville to learn about the social housing project in Soweto.
Pimville, was located next to Kliptown, the oldest black residential district of Johannesburg and was first laid out in 1891 on land which formed part of Klipspruit farm.
We visit the Orlando Towers: The construction on the power station started in 1935 by two British engineers, but completion was delayed due to outbreak of the second world war. The two cooling towers were built in 1951 to supplement the existing spray pond cooling system which was running at capacity. Now the towers are home to extreme sport bungee jumping, free fall.
We visit the vilakazi street: Is well known in Soweto Township as the only street in the world with two Noble Peace Prize winners, namely Bishop Desmond Tutu, a struggle icon, and the first black president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela.
Mandela house is now a national museum commonly referred to as Mandela House, in Orlando West, Soweto. Nelson Mandela lived from 1946 to 1962.
We stop for lunch and one of the local restaurant to eat taste food popular amongst local people.
We visit the last stop Hectore Pieterson: This is a museum located in Orlando West, Soweto. To commemorate the role of students in the fight against the Apartheid in South Africa.
