Renowned as the first community of freed slaves in South America, it was founded by escaped African slaves known as Cimarrones during the Spanish colonial era. Despite centuries passing, San Basilio has diligently preserved its African culture and the Palenquero language. During your visit, immerse yourself in the rich history, enjoy traditional cuisine, experience traditional dances, instruments, and music, and take a lesson in Palenquero, a unique Creole language spoken by only 3,500 people.
