The 3-day Salkantay route is an exciting and less-traveled option for adventurers looking for a shorter route to Machu Picchu.
DAY 1 Unforgettable Adventure: Cusco to Quiswarniyoc, Salkantay Pass, and Chawllay Camp Start your adventure early with a pickup in Cusco at 2:00 a.m., followed by a 3-hour transfer to Soraypampa, the starting point of your memorable hike. At around 6:30 a.m., begin your ascent to the highest point of the entire Salkantay Trail, at 4,630 meters above sea level. You begin your descent, traveling a total of 15 kilometers downhill to reach an altitude of 2,900 meters. This descent is divided into two sections. The first section, from the summit to the lunch point, takes approximately 2 hours. After a well-deserved lunch break, continue another 3 hours to your second campsite in Chawllay. DAY 2: Discover the Beauty of the Journey: Chaullay to Santa Teresa, Hidroeléctrica and Aguas Calientes At 7:00 am, begin your hike to Sahuayaco Beach, a journey that takes approximately 5 hours. You will cross the picturesque valley of Santa Teresa, formed by the winding Salkantay River. As you explore the valley, discover a variety of plantations, including coffee, bananas, avocados, coca, and passion fruit, among others. After a 5-hour hike, you will reach Sahuayaco Beach and take local transportation for a one-hour ride to Santa Teresa. Enjoy a well-deserved lunch break before continuing by car for another 45 minutes to Hidroeléctrica. From there, embark on a leisurely 3-hour ride along the train tracks, heading to the charming town of Aguas Calientes. DAY 3 : Machu Picchu - Cusco How to get to the Main Gate of Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes: To get to the main gate of Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes, you have two options. You can either embark on a 1.5-hour panoramic hike or take a comfortable bus that costs $12. The choice is yours Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, our experienced guide will lead you on a 2.5-hour guided exploration of the Inca city, following the circuit outlined on your ticket. The guide will share with you information about the history and significance of Machu Picchu while giving you time to take photos and enjoy the stunning views.
