Start with pick-up at your hotel in Cusco and travel to Ollantaytambo station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. This is the closest town to Machu Picchu. Enjoy a scenic train ride through spectacular Andean landscapes. The train has ample seating with large windows allowing magnificent views of the jungle and surrounding mountains. Board a bus for a 25-minute ride to Machu Picchu. It is believed that the city of Machu Picchu was built in the 1450s by the Inca emperor Pachacuti as a vacation retreat. Within a century, the city would be abandoned after the Spanish conquest. The Spanish never found it, so it was spared the destruction they brought to other Inca sites. Instead, it was slowly swallowed by the jungle and hidden. Take a guided visit around the site that explains the origins of this imposing citadel and its highlights, such as the monumental Plaza de Armas, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sundial and the Cemeteries.
