Ravello was founded during the 5th century by Romans looking for a safe place to protect themselves in a world that had suddenly become unstable due to barbarian invasions.
Ravello was reborn in the Bourbon period subsequently rediscovered by intellectuals and artists, Ravello regained its importance as a culturally elite tourist place for example artists such as Richard Wagner who took inspiration from Ravello for his Parsifal.
Since the Second World War, Ravello has been home to the classical music festival, initially inaugurated to honor the presence of the King, and has developed as one of the major tourist attractions in the area.
According to legend, the town takes its name from Amalfi, a nymph loved by Hercules who was buried here at the behest of the gods. Certainly inhabited by the Romans, who had fled to the Lattari Mountains to escape the Germanic and Lombard invasions, it was a castrum for the defense of the Byzantine Duchy of Naples. The city enjoyed a privileged relationship with Byzantium due to the ability of the Amalfitans in maritime trade.
About Positano A legend tells of a painting “of the Mother of Christ” which was put on board a ship of “heretics”. After traveling for so long, the ship arrived in front of the Positano coast, stopping for no reason, and according to legend, it was the Madonna in the painting who ordered the sailors to deposit the sacred image on the beach, so that the local people could venerate it.
The Romans were attracted by the beauty of the town, building a villa on the current "big beach" and using it as a place where they could indulge in idleness.
It is said that Emperor Tiberius bought flour in the mills of Positano.
With the occupation of the Normans on the Amalfi territories and with the loss of its autonomy and the irruption of the Saracen pirates, the Amalfi territory went through a period of instability.
Only in the 18th century did Positano shine again, as evidenced by the Baroque villas and became a destination for many artists who carved his name in many works, making it known throughout the world.
