A day-tour visiting Gori-Uplistsikhe in which you will visit several sites of Georgian history, such as the Uplistsikhe cave town, Joseph Stalin’s home museum and Chronicles of Georgia.
Take the chance to visit Uplistsikhe, a cave town fortress situated on a rocky massif on the left bank of the river Mtkvari. Dating back to the 1st and 2nd millennium B.C., Uplistsikhe was an important religious, political and cultural center in the Hellenistic and late Antique periods. The place was founded in the late Bronze Age, around 1000 B.C., and continued to be inhabited until the 13th century A.D.
Between the 6th century B.C. and the 11th century A.D., Uplistsikhe was one of the most important political and religious centers of pre-Christian Kartli, one of the predecessors of the Georgian state. Visitors can still walk among the ancient streets, rock-carved theater, royal halls, pharmacy, pagan temples and Christian churches, while the remains of granaries and large clay wine vessels give us some clue as to the daily life of the inhabitants.
You can also visit Joseph Stalin’s Museum in Gori, Stalin (originally Georgian) was the secretary general of the Communist Party during World War II. The museum features Stalin’s house (a hut where he was born), his armor plated railway carriage and a statue that was controversially standing in the main square of Gori up until 2010.
Following this, you will venture Chronicles of Georgia. The capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, is famous for several impressive sights. Among them are the Narikala fortress, the Mother of Kartli, the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral and the largest - the “History of Georgia” memorial.
Few of the city's guests visit it, although the semantic load and large-scale dimensions are worth your attention and time.
The grandiose ensemble of monumental sculptures “History of Georgia” was created by the hands of the Tbilisi genius Zurab Tsereteli. He is a world famous sculptor and artist who has created many monuments in different countries, but this monument is considered one of his best works.
The memorial took 20 years to create, but, unfortunately, it has not yet been completed. There are still several elements missing in the sculpture, and the master’s tools stand waiting for the long-awaited finale.
The monument “History of Georgia” or as it is also called “Georgian Stonehenge” consists of 16 columns made of copper and bronze 35 meters high. Each of them is divided into three parts: the bottom depicts scenes from the Bible, the middle depicts people significant for Georgia (saints, kings, poets,), and the top depicts everyday scenes (holidays, harvest and grape harvests).
When you look at the memorial from a bird's eye view, a huge cross looms, and a small church built nearby and a cross made of St. Nino's vines complement the biblical theme.
The lack of integrity of the monument is of course a big minus, but its majesty does not suffer from this at all. Once inside, you realize how several people and events create history and influence its course.
It’s hard to describe the feeling from the “History of Georgia” memorial, so go on a tour with us to get unforgettable emotions!
