Augustusburg Castle towers high above the Zschopau Valley on the edge of the Ore Mountains. Elector August of Saxony had the monumental Renaissance castle built over 450 years ago as a symbol of his power. Today, it houses cultural treasures and exhibitions that are second to none.
On our discovery tour of Augustusburg Castle, you will learn how the Renaissance Castle took shape. In the electoral chambers in the Lindenhaus, our tour guides will tell you all about the everyday life and court life of the electoral family. You can marvel at the only surviving portrait of the electoral couple August and Anna and their children on the altarpiece in the palace church. It was painted by Lucas Cranach the Younger and is a precious work of art of European standing. Finally, you will visit the fountain house with the second deepest fountain and the oldest preserved driving galley in Saxony. This masterpiece of water supply ensured the management of the castle at an altitude of over 500 meters.
