Our city tour starts in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the Landungsbrücken with a view of the harbour, passing ferries, museum ships and container gantry cranes.

We start with a brief introduction to the history of the harbour, explain why the Old Elbe Tunnel was built in 1911 and descend deep below the Elbe. A staircase leads down, but we can also use the original pit cages that were used to transport harbour workers down. There is plenty of time for great photos in the tunnel. Then it's back up to daylight.

We make our way through the groups of tourists waiting to embark on an exciting harbour tour. This would be a good option for before or after the tour. After a short walk, we reach the Portuguese quarter. Here, the Scandinavian churches are lined up one after the other. A good place to explore the special Christmas markets at Christmas time. At the end of the street, we walk up across the Michelwiese (meadow to St Michael's Church).

Once at the top, perhaps a little out of breath, we have a fantastic view of perhaps the most beautiful church tower in Hamburg with the largest church clock in Germany.

Let's go into the church and marvel at this extraordinary construction. There is a lot of gold and marble to see. Can you find the 5 organs? A look into the crypt is of course also part of the tour. If you like, you can also take the lift up the tower to the viewing platform.

A second church on the way to our destination is St Ansgar's Church. In contrast to St Michael's Church, this is a Catholic church. The differences become very clear here. But not what you might think!

Fleetinsel is just a name and not a real island. There are very good restaurants around a beautiful square that invites you to linger.

We don't allow ourselves to be distracted and end up in the next street that invites us to go window shopping. Neuer Wall: an elegant shopping street. We only use it for window shopping.

After passing elegant merchants' houses, we stand in front of today's Chamber of Commerce - the former stock exchange, enter the inner courtyard and already have a great view of the back of Hamburg City Hall. Let yourself be enchanted by the stories about the details in the inner courtyard. If open, we walk through the entrance hall in front of the town hall. The neo-Renaissance façade impresses with its many statues and ornaments.
