One of the darkest chapters in Bamberg's history is the persecution of witches, to which hundreds of citizens fell victim in the 17th century. The hunt for witches and sorcerers was by no means limited to red-haired women or elderly mothers, as common clichés would have us believe, but included men and women from all social classes up to Bamberg mayors. Anyone who ended up in the "Trudenhaus," Bamberg's witch prison, was as good as lost.
