This tour takes you through one of the few northern German cities whose historic centre survived the Second World War largely unscathed. You will get a lot of infos about Lüneburg's older history, deeply connected to the salt trade and the Hanseatic League and you will learn how the town's former wealth came about through salt mining and the importance of the Hanseatic League.
The route starts at the harbour, a former trading centre for smelting fish, and takes you through streets whose names bear witness to historical events and professions, such as the grap foundry and the mint master. Buildings such as Lüneburg Castle and St Michael's Church are examples of baroque architecture and religious significance. The German TV series ‘Red Roses’ uses the picturesque old town as a filming backdrop, which are also be part of the tour experience.
