You start the tour at the Sanahin Monastery, a 10th-century marvel. This complex is a prime example of Armenian religious architecture, blending Byzantine ecclesiastical elements with traditional vernacular styles of the historical Gugark region.

The next stop is the medieval Sanahin bridge: an exquisite basalt construction. Its unique stone and enchanting colours blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, making it a cherished landmark.

Continue to the Haghpat Monastery, one of Armenia’s largest and most impressive monastic complexes. Founded by Queen Khosrovanush, the wife of King Ashot III the Merciful, in AD 976, Haghpat features a narthex, two corridor-sepulchers, a refectory, a scriptorium, the Chapel of Hamazasp, a belfry, several chapel-tombs, and numerous khachkars, all enclosed by a fortified rampart. This magnificent monastery reflects the key characteristics of Medieval Armenian architecture and was famous for its rich library and school, where students studied philosophy, rhetoric, music, and manuscript illumination.

Conclude your journey with a visit to the awe-inspiring Akhtala Fortress, dating back to the 10th century. One of Armenia's best-preserved fortresses, the complex is perched atop a cliff. The fortress walls, monastery gates, and tower present an impregnable facade. Stretching from north to south, the fortress walls encircle the entire cliff. The main entrance, a vaulted hall, is situated on the northern side, adjacent to a three-story pyramid-shaped tower. Surrounded by gorges on three sides, Akhtala Fortress enjoys natural protection and harmonizes beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

Inside the fortress, you will find the main temple, the small Church of St. Basil, and the ruins of a two-story residential complex.
