Saint Louis was the capital of Senegal when it was a French colony from 1673 to 1902 and was then moved to Dakar. The stunning city of Saint Louis is also remarkably close to Senegal's scenic national parks, and it is not something you would want to miss as Senegal is truly known for its amazing biodiversity, including hundreds of bird species. At the same time, Saly also serves as a good starting point for the equally beautiful islands of Senegal, including Joal Fadiout.
While in the capital city of Dakar, be sure to visit the stunning Rose Lake (called Lac Rose in French) about eighteen miles from Dakar. Pink Lake with its real name "Retba" is one of the most visited Senegalese places in the world. Due to its special pink colour, very salty water, the arrival of Paris-Dakar, the pink lake has captured the hearts of the Senegalese as well as many tourists. Do not miss a visit to the Saluma Delta National Park, which spans 76,000 hectares in western Senegal. Try to find time to visit a village like Kedougou where you can see what rural life is like in Senegal. To genuinely enjoy Senegal, you must go for a walk and explore the countryside.
