The ancient city of Harar, the world’s fourth holiest city to Islam, boasts of eighty-two mosques inside the strong walls of Harars Old City, but the primary attraction to Ethiopia’s Old Land is without doubt its thirteenth-century stone-cut churches. Lalibela is home to eleven ancient monolithic churches, carved completely out of single pink granite stone, and featuring windows, columns, and intricate roofs using nothing more than hammers and chisels.
