Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland, overlooking the open Atlantic Ocean, framed by a long black volcanic sand beach. Vik is a remote town in the south of Iceland, nestled in the shadow of the Myrdalsjokull glacier overlooking the Katla volcano. A 45-minute drive from Reykjavik will bring you to this beautiful village called Vik.
Overall, Vic has become an excellent base for traveling along the black sand coast. The black sand beach is as far away as Reykjavik's tourists, so you will start to see fewer tourists as you start your journey from Vik to Jokulsarlon along Iceland's south coast. Along with Skogafoss and Jokulsarlon, the black sand beach here is one of Iceland's most popular attractions, but along the coast you can easily walk to get away from the crowds. South Iceland is known for glacier snowmobiling, glacier walking and ice climbing, as well as quad biking or horseback riding on the beautiful black sand beach.
Nearby attractions include Dyrholaey, Reynisdrangar sea cliffs, Reynisfjara black sand beach, Solheimajokull glacier, Myrdalsjokull ice sheet, Solheimasandur wreck in Solheimasandur plain, Hjorleifshofdi, Kotlujokull gorge, Kotlujokull Takgil glacier, Loftsalahellir cave and many other places. To the south lies Iceland's south coast and many of the most famous spots are within driving distance, such as Skogafoss waterfall, Myrdalsjokull glacier, Dyrholaey and the nearby black sand area of Solheimasandur. At the top of the hike, enjoy views of the surrounding beaches, glaciers, and basalt columns that only Iceland can offer.
While you cannot climb Katra Volcano alone, there are many tours you can join from Vik and Reykjavik. If you do not have enough time to drive from Vik to Jegusalon, you can walk a few less than an hour to see the glaciers of Scatafell National Park. Hikers can easily hike for a few days in Skatarfell National Park while visiting Iceland as there are some great trails to explore.
Vik offers easy access to more than just some of Iceland's famous glaciers. If seeing the icebergs of Jokulsarlons gives you a taste for glacial adventure, then you will find it closer to Vik Iceland. The last stop on this journey from Reykjavik to Vik is one of Iceland's most famous black sand beaches: Reynisfjara. Although the trip to Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach Glacier Lagoon Jokulsarlon can take a long time from Vik as it is 2.5 hours one way, it is one of my favourite things to do in Iceland.
Just a 10-minute drive from Vik, there are many beautiful places in the area such as waterfalls, glaciers, black sand beaches and volcanoes. A full day of adventure can be tiring, so it is nice to have a "base camp" in Vic for one. There is no better place to enjoy a beach walk in the shadow of a volcano than here in Vik.
