Arequipa: Route of the Sillar and Petroglyphs of Culebrillas

Explore the quarries and areas where the sillar stone was extracted, admire a vast canyon with cliffs and petroglyphs created by the Wari culture more than a thousand years ago.
The Sillar Route is located northeast of the city of Arequipa and begins at the Añashuayco Quarries, located in the district of Cerro Colorado. With a current extension of 2 kilometers, it crosses the quarries of Añashuayco, Cortadores and the Virgen de Culebrillas quarry. This tour is a unique experience where artisans show the traditional techniques of ashlar extraction. This work has been recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Nation, playing a crucial role in the local architecture.

ITINERARY:

• Pick up at the hotel in Arequipa:
We start the tour by picking you up at your hotel in Arequipa.

• Drive to the Sillar Quarries:
We will drive towards Uchumayo and arrive at the sillar stone quarries to begin the guided tour.

• Exploration of the quarries:
We will get to know the ancient art of the artisans and learn about the origin and extraction of the ashlar stone.

• Visit to the Culebrillas Canyon:
We will walk until we reach the Culebrillas Canyon, which has been shaped by the passage of water over time.

• Additional exploration:
We will have the opportunity to take pictures and observe the petroglyphs found in the area.

• Return to Arequipa:
At the end of the tour, we will return to downtown Arequipa to conclude our experience.
