विवरण
Kamp Vught or 'Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch' was constructed in 1943, as the only SS concentration camp outside Nazi-Germany. The museum tells its history, based on personal stories and objects.
Konzentrationslager Herzogenbusch was part of a network of terror that stretched through Europe and beyond. It was constructed in 1943, as the only SS concentration camp outside Nazi- Germany. It remained in use until the autumn of 1944. In just eighteen months, over 32,000 people faced incarceration and were put to work here; most of them because they were Jews or members of the resistance. Camp Vught was also the first SS camp evacuated by the Allied forces, in October 1944. The memorial centre gives a more in-depth insight into the origins of Camp Vught, and the lives of the people imprisoned there.
In the permanent exhibition ‘Camp Vught: Seven seasons and 32,000 stories’, you can walk through the history of Camp Vught based on many personal stories and objects. Stories about people from 35 different nationalities, who each experienced the Second World War in their own unique way.
The main building of the museum houses the permanent exhibition, regularly supplemented by a temporary exhibition. The outdoor area includes a model of the former campsite, a reconstructed barrack, several watch towers, the original crematorium, and a monument commemorating the children’s transports of June 1943.
Barrack 1B is the last remaining original barrack from Camp Vught. The exhibition ‘If walls could speak’ covers four periods: the concentration camp (1943-1944), the use of the site as a place of residence for German civilian evacuees, Dutch people suspected of collaboration, and Moluccan KNIL soldiers and their families.
The former execution site of Camp Vught is within walking distance of the museum, hidden in the woods. A monument marks the actual site where 329 men were executed. The walking route is approximately 4 kilometers.
Along the access road to the museum, following the line of the camp's former railway, are two restored freight wagons. These wagons, a worldwide symbol of persecution and deportation during the Second World War, mark the historical landscape. 15 aluminium sleepers are inscribed with the dates of the 11 transports, each carrying over 400 prisoners, that left from Vught station and the four transports that left from Camp Vught.
