The NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM of Naples is a treasure chest of absolute value for what concerns the Greek and Roman archeology. Inside it has a spectacular collection of objects, frescoes, mosaics, erotic collections, from Pompeii and Herculaneum. The cities destroyed by the eruption of 79 AD will reveal their wonders, covered by the fury of the volcano.

Another incredible collection of the Museum is that of the Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum, a rich residence of the Pisoni family. The owner was Julius Caesar's father-in-law. Here we will be able to see the papyrus scrolls with writings on Greek philosophy, charred by the temperature of the pyroclastic flow. There are also 90 statues and objects excavated from the volcanic rock that buried the city in 79 AD. Among these the Dancers and the famous Runners, merged in the act of starting their running competition.

Another sector of rare beauty is that of the statues of the Farnese collection, the family of the mother of the first Bourbon King of Naples: Charles III. They were transported from Rome at the end of the 18th century, at the behest of the second Bourbon king, Ferdinand IV. They show off their majesty in the ground floor galleries. Among these are the statues of the Baths of Caracalla to be seen. Among these the Hercules and the majestic Farnese Bull, which decorated the luxurious palaces of the Farnese in Rome.

Inside the statues rooms of the Baths of Caracalla there is also an incredible find from the courts of the Greek kings who ruled Egypt: the Farnese Cup, the largest existing cameo.

The Museum's collections also include the first Egyptian collection of a modern museum, opened in Naples in 1821. The Magna Graecia collection, with its precious vases and jewelery treasures, and the Prehistory and Protohistory collection.

The whole is contained in a majestic building. It was built from the beginning of the seventeenth century by Giulio Cesare Fontana and completed only in the first half of the twentieth century. On the second floor the MUSEUM presents the spectacular Meridiana room. Its majestic dimensions characterize it as a real building within the building.
