Soweto became a center of resistance to apartheid, and the Soweto Uprising of 1976 was a major turning point in the struggle to end apartheid.
Today, Soweto is a vibrant and diverse township with a population of over 1.3 million people. It is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the Mandela House Museum.
