Panaji - the quiet pearl of Goa
Panjim is situated on the south bank of the wide Mandovi River and is one of India's smallest and pleasantest state capitals.
The city of Panjim has preserved its Portuguese heritage well, and parts of it still consist of narrow winding streets, old houses with overhanging balconies, red-tiled roofs and numerous small bars and cafés.
Fontainhas takes you back to the Portuguese era as it retains the charm and character of the old world. Founded in 1540, the Church of the Immaculate Conception stands majestically in the commercial heart of the city.
On the riverbank is the Secretariat, which was the summer residence of the 16th-century ruler Yusuf Adil Shah. June 18 Road is a busy commercial area with shops selling everything from cashews to leather goods to homewares.
Azad Maidan Square has a beautiful pavilion with classic Corinthian columns and is a venue for cultural events. Panaji has many bars and cafes, and the best way to experience the place is to stroll along the long boulevards along the banks of the Mandovi River or to enjoy the sunset.
