While Hessen is not considered by some adventurers as being the ultimate destination, there are a few things about this German state that make it well worth the trip. The State of Hessen Germany is filled with magic small towns, picturesque landscapes, and castles, some of which inspired storied legends and tales still told to this day. The most popular travel destinations in Hesse are beautiful and diverse, and Frankfurt’s Rhein-Main area is a major port of call for visitors from around the world.

The Rhine Valley

The region west of Frankfurt Rhein-Main merges with the Rheingau, part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO world heritage site, and it just happens to be one of Germanys finest wine-growing regions. Historic cities such as Marburg, Wetzlar, Weilburg, and Limburg an der Lahn are popular destinations in the idyllic Lahn valley, as well as beautiful places to go canoeing and biking. The most famous of the many beautiful palaces and parks, Bergpark Wilhelmshohe, has been designated as a UNESCO world heritage site, making it an essential stop on any trip to Kassel.

Bergpark Wilhelmshohe is home to several palace landmarks as well, including one built by Napoleons younger brother, Jerome Bonaparte. Limburg itself is known for its numerous preserved half-timbered houses lining winding lanes in the Old Town, as well as the Cathedral of Saint George, the regions Romanesque masterpiece. The fairy-tale city developed around the castle in Limburg, which has stood high above the valley since it was built in the seventh century.

Frankfurt – The Megacity

Located one hour north of Frankfurt am Main, the city of Marburg looks as though it came out of a fairy tale book. Situated about 35km north of Frankfurt am Main, Butzbach is the location of the Landgrafenschloss (Landgraves Castle). Old towns in the middle of wood are nothing new in Hesse, but DARMSTADT is magic, even by regional standards, flanked by medieval defences, with a central Marktplatz so theme-park-like that you must pinch yourself to believe that this home -- perfectly authentic -- was not built this way just to draw tourists.

Most of the pretty things on display at the museum are delightfully crafted Hesse half-timbered buildings. They had one of these metal tables that had carvings of the city and their historical sites. We went all over town, from Limburg Cathedral, the old bridge over the river Lahn, all around.

On top of this, Hesse has some ancient cities which are worth exploring, like Bad Homburg or beautiful towns of the Rhine valley. There are a ton of things to do around Frankfurt, and small towns have so much more character and history, without a lot of people. So far, we have developed the habit of flying to the Frankfurt Airport, and then Googling the nearest towns in Hessen to visit.

Frankfurt – The entrance to Germany

Hesse is fast and easy to reach, considering that Frankfurt airport is in the heart of the region. For many international visitors, Frankfurt is their landing spot for Germany. As a financial hub of the German state of Hessen, Frankfurt-am-Main is no stranger to tall buildings.

The Cathedral of Frankfurt is the largest religious building in the city of Frankfurt. Do not forget to visit the Frankfurt Cathedral and discover the religious history which is found inside its walls. Romer is located close to some of the more popular destinations in Frankfurt as well as touristic sites, including Old St. Nicholas church.

The Iron Footbridge is among the best things to see in the old town of Frankfurt, and in Hessen as a whole, the bridge is near some of the city’s most popular tourist destinations, since it links the townships from one another. The city of Braunfels, Hessen, has plenty of things to offer, but none are quite as popular as this namesake castle. If you are in Hessen, Germany, then you cannot skip visiting the Castle of Limburg.

The Stadel Museum, Frankfurt, Germany, is one of the perfect museums for you to take a trip to. Most of the important German art collections are preserved, delightfully preserved, and displayed at the Stadel Museum in Frankfurt. There is also a smaller museum, the Fossilien und Heimatmusem Messel, in the old town centre of Messel, just north of the railway station, which displays many fossils; the smaller museum, as well as Frankfurt’s Senckenberg Museum, are well worth visiting, in addition to seeing the Pit itself.
