Description

Discover the famous township in the world where two noble peace prizes winners lived on the same street.
Soweto, which stands for South Western Townships, is a large township of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in Gauteng, South Africa. It is the largest Black urban complex in South Africa. Soweto borders the city's mining belt in the south.
Soweto was originally created in the 1930s by the White government of South Africa as a place to house Black South Africans who were forced to move away from Johannesburg. The apartheid government segregated Black people from white people and restricted Blacks' movement within South Africa. Soweto became a center of resistance to apartheid, and the Soweto Uprising of 1976 was a major turning point in the struggle to end apartheid.

Today, Soweto is a vibrant and diverse township with a population of over 1.3 million people. It is home to a number of historical landmarks, including the Hector Pieterson Memorial and the Mandela House Museum. Soweto is also a center of culture and arts, with a thriving music scene and a number of art galleries and museums.
