Description
Travel back in time and experience Ancient Rome's underground levels on this extensive catacombs tour, guided by a professional local expert. In an intimate group of only 6 people, you will dive into the mystery of what used to lie beneath Rome.
Your guide will meet you near the Basilica di San Clemente where you will begin your tour beneath the foundations of the cathedral. Follow your guide to discover what lies beneath, the dimly lit relics of a 4th-century church and 2nd-century pagan temple still in impressive condition. From 5 stories underground, your expert guide will expose the many secrets and rituals that once were held within these walls. Witness some of the cities earliest masterpieces still visible to the public as you make your way throughout the underground.
Next, the historic stories continue as you visit two more Catacomb sites, where you will explore even more layers of the rich past of Rome's Underground - some parts of which date back to the 2nd-century. Burial grounds to many early popes and martyrs, the catacombs were also the graves to some of Rome's first Christians regardless of social status. These years were some of the Eternal City's most tumultuous times, and these ancient tombs remain fascinating to tourists and historians alike. This tour can be enjoyed by the whole family and is perfect for any traveler with an interest in Rome's history or religion.
