Description

A Guarani legend tells that "a nomadic tribe, momentarily stopped in the sierras where the Tabay River rises, decided to continue their journey, leaving an old Indian in the place, no longer in the mood to continue. His daughter Yarii stayed behind to accompany him. One afternoon the old man received the visit of a stranger, whom the color of his skin and clothes denounced as a foreigner. In homage to the guest, the Indian roasted an acutí and a tambú of abundant meat and very pondered.
Before such shows of hospitality and affection, the visitor, who was none other than Tupá (God of Good), rewarded his hosts by making a plant sprout from the Earth, so that they could entertain their guests whenever they wanted and, at the same time, distract the lonely hours of their refuge. Likewise, Tupá named Yarii goddess protector of that plant.
In this way, the myth refers to the origin of "Caá-Mate", the yerba mate (ilex paraguariensis) of our days. "Caá", from the Guaraní, means grass, and "Mate", which comes from the Quechua "Mati", means small gourd for drinking.
The land of mate is located in the American Southern Cone, mainly in Uruguay, the largest consumer of yerba mate globally.
