We discuss colonial times through the revolutionary war and civil war.
The tour covers such curious subjects as Savannah’s early history, from the founding of the colony of Georgia in 1733. One of the more commonly misunderstood characters of Georgia history is the founder himself, James Edward Oglethorpe. Yet Oglethorpe is not the only early leader who deserves closer scrutiny. Some of the most influential figures in Georgia history are tragically overlooked. Extraordinary leaders such as Tomochichi, chief of the Yamacraw Native Americans, are often neglected. Tomochichi granted to Oglethorpe the land on which Georgia was first created. Furthermore, some of Georgia’s great early leaders were women. These pioneering Americans are relegated to sidebars in the history textbooks, but Mad Cat Tours uses source material from letters, diaries and public accounts to bring their voices to life once again, restoring them to the position of honor they earned and have always deserved.
When you dig deeper into the past you find that it is full of hilarious episodes and curious characters that rival even the best fiction! Join us on this unique Savannah exploration.
