Description
Dive beyond Savannah's pretty facade and immerse yourself in the detailed history of Georgia's oldest city.
Allow a Savannah native to fill you in on the ways in which this small city punches above its weight with the intensity of its history, its people, and its beauty. This 3-hour tour will cover a lot of ground so you get to see the uniquely varied nature of Savannah's urban landscape. The city's unusually large and well-preserved Landmark Historic District also allows your guide to better re-create the lives and events that have been unfolding here for nearly 300 years. Spend your morning absorbing tales of Savannah in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War; stories about notable women, African Americans, and Native Americans; and the great houses rich men built for themselves overlooking our famous squares.
Meet your guide in Telfair Square where, after a quick rundown of the basics, you'll start off learning about one of the most influential women in Savannah's history. From there, head into the northwest corner of the Historic District and through City Market, an area especially rich in landmarks associated with Savannah's Black history. The rest of the tour continues up Savannah's central north-south spine, Bull Street. This corridor is a wealth of monuments and landmarks that give visitors a chance to visualize Savannah's transformation from a scrappy colonial frontier town into a prosperous and ever more opulent antebellum cotton port.
The tour ends on the south end the Landmark Historic District, within easy reach of Forsyth Park and a number of other local attractions. Or you can hop on the free DOT shuttle and continue your exploration into other neighborhoods!
