Description

Visit Windsor, the historic home of British royalty. Explore the world's largest occupied castle. Then explore the fabulous seat of learning, the old university city of Oxford.
We depart from Cambridge at 8am by luxury mini-coach for the 1.5 hour drive to Windsor. All Roots' tours are for small groups of no more than 16 passengers so tours are flexible and informal with a great chance to meet your fellow travellers.

Our journey takes us to the west of London, passing near to Heathrow Airport. On arrival in Windsor, join your guide for a 90-minute walking tour of the town ending outside the main entrance to Windsor Castle. We time the tour to coincide with Changing of the Guard. Although not held everyday, the pageantry, costumes and symbolism of the tradition when it is being held is not to be missed.

Then, it's into the castle to admire the wonderful banquet halls and State Apartments used by the Royal family, with their sumptuous furniture and furnishings, fabulous paintings and fascinating exhibits. Don't miss St. George's Chapel, the church inside the castle grounds where the most recent kings and queens are buried, including King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth II.

Time for a spot of lunch before we head off for the 1-hour drive to Oxford. Alternatively, you are welcome to bring your own lunch and eat on the bus as we travel, or take a late lunch on arrival in Oxford.

During the afternoon join your guide for an optional walking tour of Oxford, or, if you prefer, spend the afternoon doing your own thing. Many think Oxford and Cambridge are identical but your guide will demonstrate that this is certainly not the case. The tour passes some of the most impressive buildings of Oxford University including The Bodleian Library, the Bridge of Sighs, Radcliffe Camera and a variety of the old colleges.

There's free time, too... why not explore the remarkable Ashmolean Museum, the University Botanic Gardens or go shopping in the streets of the historic city centre.

Finally, at 6pm we make our way cross-country back to Cambridge. The journey back should return us to central Cambridge by 8pm.
