Entebbe Zoo, officially known as the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), is a wildlife sanctuary and education centre in Entebbe, Uganda. It is situated near the shores of Lake Victoria, approximately 30 kilometres from Uganda’s capital, Kampala.
It was established in 1952 for wildlife conservation and to provide sanctuary to injured, orphaned, or rescued animals from illegal trade.
The zoo plays a critical role in conservation education and awareness, focusing on providing a home for animals and educating visitors about biodiversity and conservation efforts. The zoo houses a variety of animal species native to Africa, including lions, chimpanzees, elephants, rhinos, and various bird species. The centre also acts as a rehabilitation place for animals that cannot immediately return to the wild.
